THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Karolina Pliskova has been in the wilderness for much of this season but a three-set victory over Petra Kvitova at the Stuttgart Open last week suggests she could be on her way back. The 30-year-old has won two and lost two of her first four matches on clay this season but she has great pedigree on this surface as a Masters winner in Rome back in 2019 and a two-time finalist there from 2020 and 2021. The altitude at the Madrid Open has favoured big-servers in the past, as last season’s Men’s final between Alexander Zverev and Matteo Berrettini can attest, and if she finds her rhythm early this campaign she could be a dark horse for very deep run indeed. World number 77 Marie Bouzkova will be hoping to be one of a few players to shock the fragile world number seven here, though, after a strong qualifying run to reach the main draw in Madrid. The 23-year-old recently finished runner-up to Sloane Stephens at the Guadalajara Open and she won the Istanbul Open Women’s Doubles title alongside Sara Sorribes Tormo last weekend for some excellent clay practice.
This match looks a tough call between an experienced champion in below par form and her fellow Czech well capable of springing a surprise. Backing Bouzkova to win at least a set could be the shrewd move here but the sensible call remains taking Pliskova to win at least one.
