THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Karolina Pliskova has been a tough player to pin down form-wise for much of the last few seasons but it looks like a peak week, rather than trough, in Dubai after a straight-sets victory over Marketa Vondrousova on Monday. The 30-year-old may end up one of the most talented players on the WTA tour never to win a Grand Slam title but she owns 16 WTA titles and she has reached six Masters finals, winning two of them. This looks set to be a thriller against world number seven Maria Sakkari, who beat Caroline Garcia in three sets at the Qatar Open last week before an encouraging, yet predictable, three-set defeat to Jessica Pegula in the semi-finals. The Greek’s ability cannot be called into question but she too-often stumbles in the latter stages of tournaments, finishing runner-up in two Masters finals last season to Iga Swiatek in Miami and Pegula again in Guadalajara.
Two top but unpredictable players make for an exciting match here but it is tough to call a winner confidently. The pair share a 2-2 head-to-head record with a win apiece on hardcourts but Pliskova took their most recent encounter in three sets at the Canada Masters last summer. Back the Czech to earn at least a set or risk the total of three sets option here.
