THE LOWDOWN
Former world number one Karolina Pliskova finished runner-up to Angelique Kerber here back in 2016 after a straight-sets victory over Serena Williams in the semi-finals. The 30-year-old has twice finished runner-up at a Grand Slam after losing to Ash Barty in three sets last season in searing form that came to an abrupt halt here last year in a quarter-final defeat by Maria Sakkari. The Czech then struggled with her form for the best part of 10 months, missing much of the start of the season through injury, but a recent run to the semi-finals of the Canada Masters suggests she could be a serious threat to the draw in New York.
THE PREDICTION
World number 67 Magda Linette played well this week in Cleveland to reach the quarter-finals before an exit to in-form Liudmila Samsonova. The 33-year-old stunned Ons Jabeur in the first round of Roland-Garros back in June to create just a hint of an upset here but a resurgent Karolina Pliskova is one of the toughest draws in these conditions. Pliskova has won all four of their tour-level meetings in straight sets, including here at the US Open in 2017, and backing her to make that five in a row seems reasonable here.
