THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Karolina Pliskova passed a significant test on Thursday with a straight-sets win over fellow Czech Marie Bouzkova. The 30-year-old burst into form at the Canada Masters three weeks ago with a huge run to the semi-finals before defeat to Beatriz Haddad-Maia, stopping the likes of Maria Sakkari and Amanda Anisimova on her way through. Pliskova finished runner-up to Angelique Kerber here in 2016 and she emulated that last season at Wimbledon, losing in three sets to Ash Barty. World number 13 Belinda Bencic came back from a set down to beat Sorana Cirstea on Thursday for a second-successive three-set victory. The 25-year-old lost to Bianca Andreescu in the semi-finals here back in 2019 to set her best Grand Slam showing and she also lost to the eventual champion last season in a straight-sets defeat to Emma Raducanu in the quarter-finals. The Swiss beat Pliskova in their only previous meeting at Indian Wells in 2019 but the Czech looks to be in the better current form. Backing Pliskova to win at least a set looks the sensible option as the likelier of two very capable victors.
