THE LOWDOWN

KAROLINA PLISKOVA

30-year-old Karolina Pliskova won the battle of former world number ones on Monday, ousting Victoria Azarenka in a thrilling match over three sets. The Czech has finished runner-up twice at Grand Slams, firstly here to Angelique Kerber in 2016 and then last season at Wimbledon to Ash Barty after beating Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals. Pliskova recently reached the semi-finals of the Canada Masters in a sudden, welcome return to form after injury hampered the start of her season.

ARYNA SABALENKA

Former world number two Aryna Sabalenka came back from a set down to beat Danielle Collins in a fierce battle on Monday night, her second comeback victory of the campaign after ousting Kaia Kanepi in the second round. The 24-year-old lost in the semi-finals here to Leylah Fernandez last season, her second-successive last four exit after defeat to Karolina Pliskova at Wimbledon. After struggling most of this season, despite reaching two tour finals along the way, Sabalenka looks to be forcing her way back into form just in time.

THE PREDICTION

Aryna Sabalenka won her first two meetings against Karolina Pliskova on tour in 2018, both in three tight sets on grass and hardcourts at Eastbourne and Cincinnati respectively. Pliskova then returned the favour in similar conditions at Wimbledon and Montreal last season, although both of her wins came in semi-finals to suggest the Czech has the edge here on experience. Sabalenka has been battling through Grand Slams in spite of her ailing serve, which is by far her biggest weapon when on song, but Pliskova has hers back and firing well after also struggling this season. The sensible move is backing the Czech to win at least a set here considering she has done so in all four of their matches. The Czech’s icy mentality should see her through eventually against a firebrand like Sabalenka but this should come seriously close.
