THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Simona Halep could be the dark horse at Wimbledon after missing out on defending her title through injury last year. The 30-year-old beat Serena Williams in the final here in 2019 in one of the most complete performances at SW19 in recent memory to become a two-time Grand Slam champion after winning Roland-Garros the year before. Halep is now working with Williams’ ex-coach Patrick Mouratoglou – a partnership that has so far seen her reach back-to-back semi-finals in Birmingham and Bad Homburg. This is a seriously tough opener, though, against former world number 19 Karolina Muchova. The 25-year-old is still returning to the tour after a long injury lay-off from last season’s US Open but she has reached the quarter-finals in each of her last two appearances at Wimbledon and a first meeting with Halep here should be one of the more entertaining first round clashes.
On recent form, Halep can be tentatively backed to win outright but you could be forgiven for taking at least a set inside an accumulator.
