Both world number 48 Ajla Tomljanovic and number 235 Karolina Muchova are anomalies at their current rankings, especially Muchova as a former world number 19 desperately trying to stay fit on tour long enough to rediscover her best form. The 26-year-old reached the round of 16 here in 2020 and the semi-finals of the Australian Open last season, where she stunned Ash Barty in the last eight, but she suffered an injury here last season in New York that saw her miss seven months from the tour and she has had to pull out of three matches since amidst several further breaks through injuries. 29-year-old Tomljanovic should be ranked well inside the top 40 on tour, perhaps even top 30, after reaching the quarter-finals of Wimbledon for a second-successive season but ranking points were denied there to see her unrewarded for losing to the eventual champion once again. The Aussie has knuckled down since, though, to beat the likes of Paula Badosa, Sloane Stephens and Veronika Kudermetova in recent weeks and she should be backed to beat the unfortunate Muchova at this moment in time. Leave this match out of an accumulator, though, with the Czech’s fitness in question.
