World number 24 Karen Khachanov was shocked in the first round of the Madrid Open last week by Lucas Pouille in, perhaps, a hangover from almost beating Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals of the Serbia Open the week before. The 25-year-old has been struggling for form overall, though, with a 2-6 record stretching back to the semi-finals of the Qatar Open in February and he usually fares well on clay as a solid-as-they-come baseliner. There is the slightest scent of an upset in the air against Italian wildcard Giulio Zeppieri but it would take the performance of the youngster’s life on Monday and could depend on how much of a turnout he receives from the home crowds. 20-year-old Zeppieri has lost both of his tour-level matches so far but he has enjoyed some strong results on the Challenger circuit and could force a decider here if Khachanov starts too slowly. Backing the Russian to win outright is the sensible if uninspiring call.
