World number 25 Karen Khachanov came out swinging in Friday with an excellent performance against tough opposition, beating the 10th seed Cam Norrie in four sets. The 26-year-old has gone under the radar so far at Roland-Garros but with good reason as he so often struggles to string consistent performances together, with his last title coming back in 2018 at the Paris Masters. Still, Khachanov was a quarter-finalist here in 2019 before defeat to Dominic Thiem and he emulated that feat at Wimbledon last season before a five-set defeat to Denis Shapovalov.
CARLOS ALCARAZ
World number six Carlos Alcaraz was exceptional on Friday night in beating an admittedly out-of-sorts Sebastian Korda in straight sets. The 19-year-old is riding a 13-match winning streak on tour after winning the Barcelona Open and Madrid Open back-to-back, with his first Masters title coming at the Miami Open back in March and a further clay title won at the Rio Open before that for a total of four titles won in 2022 and five overall. Alcaraz has lost just three times this season, to Mateo Berrettini at the Australian Open, Rafael Nadal at Indian Wells and Korda at the Monte-Carlo Open, and he became the first ever player to beat Djokovic and Nadal in successive rounds on clay on his way to the Madrid Open title.
THE PREDICTION
Carlos Alcaraz will benefit greatly from the quick win over Sebastian Korda after a five-set thriller against Albert Ramos-Vinolas on Wednesday that almost reached the five-hour mark and he will be in for another baseline battle against Karen Khachanov. The Russian is a tall, powerful brick-wall of a player with an incredible arm-span and engine making for what could be a thrilling contest on Sunday. It could be tight early-on in this first meeting but Alcaraz simply has too many weapons to lose this match, with his insatiable appetite for drop shots likely to catch the Russian out over and over again. Back the Spaniard to win outright, although on his most recent performance he should be able to take this in three.
