Former world number four Caroline Garcia has forced her way back inside the top 20 on the WTA tour after claiming the Cincinnati Masters with a superb performance against Petra Kvitova last Sunday. The 28-year-old won back-to-back Masters titles in 2017 at the Wuhan and Beijing Opens but it was too late to transfer into a Grand Slam campaign and she should be considered a genuine title contender in New York after beating the likes of Kvitova, Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula, Maria Sakkari and Iga Swiatek in recent weeks. Garcia has won three WTA titles so far this season, and one on each surface, after claiming the Bad Homburg Open on grass and the Poland Open on clay.
THE PREDICTION
Garcia beat world number 90 Kamilla Rakhimova in straight sets on her way to the Bad Homburg Open title back in June and two further titles later this looks a pretty straightforward opener for the in-form Frenchwoman. The 28-year-old should be considered a serious threat to the title this fortnight and she can be backed to get the campaign running with a straight-sets win against a lucky loser.
