THE PREDICTION

Former world number one Victoria Azaranka missed out on the Canada Masters after a visa issue but the Belarussian returns to the Western & Southern Open where she won the most recent of her remarkable 21 WTA titles, albeit when the tournament was held in New York die to the pandemic in 2020. 33-year-old Azarenka has struggled to impose herself on the latter stages of tournaments this season but she has only lost in the first round once this season, to Veronika Kudermetova at the Dubai Tennis Championships, and she will be desperate to perform here after losing to eventual champion Ash Barty in the round of 16 last season. World number 31 Kaia Kanepi will have other ideas, though, after a recent run to the Citi Open and a shock victory over Naomi Osaka at the Canada Masters this week. The 37-year-old has been making a habit of upsets this season as she continues to enjoy a renaissance late in her long career and this might as well be a first meeting with Azarenka with their last match coming back in 2019. This is a tricky call considering Azarenka’s pedigree here but back Kanepi to win at least a set with the better recent form behind her.
