37-year-old Kaia Kanepi’s remarkable renaissance continued last week with a run to her first final in two years, with her previous to that coming nine years ago. The veteran took the first set against Liudmila Samsonova before requiring treatment and agonisingly losing in three sets but she can move back inside the top 30 with a few wins this week in Toronto. World number 39 Naomi Osaka is targeting more than that this week after an encouraging run to the Silicon Valley Classic quarter-finals last week was ended by a superb Coco Gauff. The 24-year-old could take plenty of positives away from that defeat in San Jose and she should be considered a real and serious threat to any and all tournaments she enters on her favoured hardcourt for the remainder of the season, especially the US Open where she claimed two of her four Grand Slam titles in 2019 and 2021. Kanepi won their only previous meeting, at the US Open no less, in three sets back in 2017 but five years on this looks a winnable opener for the former world number one. Back Osaka to win in straight sets, or outright inside an accumulator considering Kanepi usually saves her best for the best.
