World number 194 Julia Grabher has hit her stride this week in Istanbul as a relative unknown who has spent the season so far on the ITF circuit. The 25-year-old is yet to drop a set this week from the qualifiers through to a huge result over the fifth seed Jil Teichmann and that momentum poses a real threat to defending champion Sorana Cirstea. There is a real feelgood story brewing behind 32-year-old Cirstea’s form over the last year that started with winning just the second WTA title of her career a full 13 years on from her first at the 2008 Tashkent Open. If she successfully defends her title this week she can get within one place of matching her career-high WTA world ranking of 21st set back in 2013 and she looks one of the favourites to win here alongside Veronika Kudermetova, whom she should meet in the semi-finals. Grabher deserves the respect of caution here, though, so take Cirstea to win outright with three sets possible.
