22-year-old Jule Niemeier and 20-year-old Eva Lys are part of Germany’s sudden new wave of talent on the WTA tour and this should be an entertaining first meeting at this level between the two. Lys is up to a career-high WTA world ranking of 217th after some steady work on the ITF and Futures circuits this season but Niemeier broke the top 50 in spirit last week with her incredible run to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon. Niemeier is one of many players suffering the consequences of the lack of ranking points from SW19 but a she survived a nervy three-set first round match against Ylena In-Albon on Tuesday to look a creditable threat to the title this week in Lausanne.
