There are too many plaudits for what 35-year-old Rafael Nadal has achieved at Roland-Garros. The Spaniard has won 13 Grand Slam titles in Paris for a record that, unlike most others, is truly insurmountable. Nadal’s loss to Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals last season ended a 33-match winning streak at Roland-Garros for only his third defeat in 17 years at the tournament, which is perhaps the most staggering stat of them all. Nadal won Roland-Garros on his debut and then the next three after that, beating a peak-powers Roger Federer in each of them, and his longest winning streak is 39 matches here after winning five in a row between 2010-2014.
However, Nadal comes into Roland-Garros in a weaker position than he is used to as his recurring foot injury rose its ugly head once more at the Italian Open last week, where he lost to Denis Shapovalov in the round of 16. Nadal started 2022 in some of his most insatiable form, though, winning his first three titles including a record-breaking 21st Men’s Singles Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. World number 82 Jordan Thompson has drawn the short straw here with Nadal likely to be fresh enough to dismiss him in straight sets for a second time. The Aussie brings next to no form to Roland-Garros and Nadal will be eager to play as little tennis as possible in his first three-set match on clay this season.
