World number 26 John Isner reached the Men’s Doubles final at the Italian Open last time out alongside Diego Schwartzman but he lost quickly in the singles as Rafael Nadal’s first opponent. The 37-year-old veteran has a big-serving game effective for all surfaces but he is at his least mobile on the clay and French wildcard Quentin Halys stands as good a chance as he will ever have at a victory over the American in these conditions. 25-year-old Halys set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 86th this week after enjoying some strong success on the Challenger circuit and he could well take a set or two from Isner with a victory over Jack Sock earlier this month on clay standing out. Nevertheless, 23rd seed isner remains the solid favourite to find a way through but backing him outright seems the suitably cautious call.
