World number 48 John Isner plays a reduced schedule these days at 37 years old but the big-serving veteran is always competitive on tour and a popular player in New York. Isner has won 14 of 16 ATP titles on US soil, most recently at last season’s Atlanta Open, but his best work came in a run to the semi-finals at Wimbledon where he lost a five-set marathon match with Kevin Anderson by 24-26 in the decider that brought in the championship tiebreak. Isner put in one of his best performances in recent years to stun Andy Murray at Wimbledon last month before a straight-sets defeat to Jannik Sinner in the third round but he looks set for a more comfortable opener here against world number 134 Federico Delbonis. The Argentine brings a woeful 10/21 record to Flushing Meadows and he twice came back from a set down to squeak through qualifying last week. Back Isner to win outright, although straight sets seem likely.
