THE PREDICTION

World number 77 Mackenzie McDonald is in his element on a hardcourt over five sets. The 27-year-old has enjoyed plenty of lengthy battles over the years at major tournaments, with last season’s second round exit to Kei Nishikori the most recent example. The American will be well-backed against world number 59 Joao Sousa and he leads their head-to-head record 2-0 after most recently beating the Portuguese at the Mallorca Championships in June. 33-year-old Sousa won the fourth ATP title of his career completely out of the blue at the Pune Open back in February but a first round exit to Laslo Djere at Winston-Salem last week suggests he will come off the worst from this clash. Both of their previous meetings have seen sets go both ways, so backing McDonald to win outright looks the sensible call here. A one-off on the match to see five-sets could well be the shrewd move, though.
