24-year-old Jil Teichmann can break the top 20 for the first time with one more round won at Roland-Garros after an incredible effort in coming back from a set down to stun Victoria Azarenka on Friday. The Swiss’ best run on tour came at last season’s Cincinnati Open where she finished runner-up to Ash Barty but she has visibly improved on her favoured clay this swing with round to the semi-finals of the Madrid Open and the quarter-finals of the Italian Open.

Former world number three Sloane Stephens is through to the second week of Roland-Garros for successive seasons in a welcome return to form on what is her favoured surface. THE PREDICTION
This could be an absolute madcap thriller between the enigmatic Sloane Stephens and battling Jil Teichmann in their first ever meeting on tour. Both players favour the clay and this match is very much about which version of the bountifully talented Stephens turns up versus the clear, searing form that Teichmann brings from her clay swing so far. A comeback victory over former world number one Victoria Azarenka is the best result of their combined efforts at Roland-Garros and runs to the last four and eight of her last two masters tournaments suggests backing Teichmann to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors is the sensible option here. Sloane Stephens could as easily lose in two here as reach the final on Saturday and not even she knows which of those is likelier.
