THE PREDICTION
Former world number two Petra Kvitova lost to Iga Swiatek in the quarter-finals of the Miami Open last month after some promising form but she has since lost her first two matches on clay in Charleston and Stuttgart. World number 35 Jil Teichmann was stunned by Austrian qualifier Julia Grabher in the round of 16 at the Istanbul Open but the Swiss is excellent on clay, her favoured surface, on which she won her first WTA title at the Palermo Open in 2019. Current world number 30 Kvitova has won six Masters titles in her illustrious career including thrice here in 2011, 2015 and 2018. Her record suggests she can find a way through here but Teichmann will be well up for the challenge and they share a 1-1 head-to-head record with a win apiece on hardcourts last season. Backing Kvitova to win at least a set on prestige may seem the sensible move here but taking Teichmann to snatch at least one seems the shrewd option on recent form.
