24-year-old Jil Teichmann will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 29th after reaching the semi-finals of the Madrid Open without yet dropping a set. The Swiss beat in-form Anhelina Kalinina in two on Wednesday to back-up three excellent results against Petra Kvitova, Leylah Fernandez and Elena Rybakina so far this campaign. Teichmann can emulate her best Masters showing with one more win after a shock run to the final of the Cincinnati Open last season was ended by Ash Barty.
JESSICA PEGULA
28-year-old Jessica Pegula will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 12th after taking out the last remaining Spaniard, Sara Sorribes Tormo, in the women’s side of the Madrid Open draw. Pegula has reached back-to-back semi-finals at Masters level after losing to eventual champion Iga Swiatek at the Miami Open last month. The American won her only WTA title to date on her favoured hardcourt surface at the 2019 Washington Open.
THE PREDICTION
There will be a first-time Masters champion crowned in Madrid this weekend between Jil Teichmann, Ekaterina Alexandrova, Ons Jabeur or Jessica Pegula and the American looks odd-on favourite to be the woman to do it after her incredible start to the 2022 season. Her run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open was stopped by world number one Ash Barty and then her run to the semi-finals of the Miami Open was halted by new world number one Iga Swiatek, suggesting it should take the very best to oust her at this stage of the Madrid Open. Jil Teichmann prides herself on being unexpected and she is yet to drop a set this campaign in some huge results. The pair have never met before and Teichmann is the more comfortable clay-courter of the two, so taking Pegula to win at least a set looks a reasonable compromise here to leave the winner up to chance.
