24-year-old Jil Teichmann will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 24th after an excellent three-set victory over last season’s Italian Open finalist Karolina Pliskova. The Swiss is coming off an excellent campaign at the Madrid Open on her favoured clay, where she reached the semi-finals before losing to eventual runner-up Jessica Pegula. Teichmann went one better at last season’s Cincinnati Open, finishing runner-up to Ash Barty.
ELENA RYBAKINA
World number 17 Elena Rybakina overcame a stern test from Lauren Davis on Wednesday to reach the round of 16 of the Italian Open without dropping a set. The 22-year-old is one of the harder hitters on tour with an excellent game for all surfaces and she famously beat Serena Williams at Roland-Garros last season to reach the quarter-finals. Rybakina finished runner-up to Ash Barty at Adelaide 1 back in January but she owns two WTA titles from the Hobart International in 2020 and the 2019 Bucharest Open.
THE PREDICTION
This will be a vastly interesting rematch for Elena Rybakina especially after she lost comfortably to Jil Teichmann at this stage of last week’s Madrid Open in conditions that would have favoured her powerful serve and groundstrokes. Teichmann is clearly in some of the best form of her career on her favoured surface and a run to the semi-finals last week suggests she is the favourite once again despite Rybakina’s higher ceiling. It would not be a surprise at all to see the Kazakh level things here and that makes this match well worth keeping away from an accumulator. Backing Teichmann to win at least a set seems the sensible concession here.
