JIL TEICHMANN
24-year-old Jil Teichmann has beaten three seriously tough opponents so far this campaign, with 16th seed Elena Rybakina the best of the lot so far as she beat the powerful Kazakh in straight sets. Teichmann should be considered a creditable threat to the title here with no sets yet dropped in Madrid against Rybakina, Leylah Fernandez and Petra Kvitova and the Swiss has form for reaching Masters finals after finishing runner-up to Ash Barty at the Cincinnati Open last season.
ANHELINA KALININA
25-year-old Anhelina Kalinina started well and then rallied impressively in a three-set victory over the ninth seed Emma Raducanu. The Ukrainian stunned an out-of-sorts Garbine Muguruza on Sunday and a first round win over a seasoned clay-courter in Sloane Stephens is in keeping with her recent excellent form on the surface. Kalinina beat Elena Rybakina on her way to the quarter-finals of the Charleston Open last month.
THE PREDICTION
Both Jil Teichmann and Anhelina Kalinina have matched their career-high WTA world rankings by reaching the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open and reaching the semi-final could see either player break the top 30 for a first time. Teichmann’s spotless record this campaign against three players who would typically be backed to beat her suggests the Swiss is a dark horse for the title here on her favoured surface but in-form Kalinina has ousted two top seeds in Muguruza and Raducanu and she came back impressively against the latter on Tuesday night. Tiechmann was the winner of their only previous tour level meeting at the Bastad Open in 2019 on clay and she looks the slight favourite here on results. Take the Swiss to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable winners.
