25-year-old Jil Teichmann came into Toronto at a career-high 21st in the WTA world rankings despite some recent struggles but she overcame an early test on Tuesday, ousting Venus Williams in straight sets. The Swiss will have to make some moves this week if she is to break the top 20, though, as she is set to lose her ranking points from her huge run to the Cincinnati Open final almost a year ago, where she lost to Ash Barty. Teichmann has drawn the short straw here against world number two Anett Kontaveit, who leads their head-to-head record 3-0. The second seed recently reached the Hamburg Open final before defeat to Bernarda Pera but she looks back to her competitive standard after suffering a few months’ complications following contracting covid-19. Teichmann would fancy herself on the clay in this match-up but so far they have met thrice on Kontaveit’s favoured hardcourt and a fourth looks unlikely to go the Swiss’ way. Back Kontaveit to win outright here, given she has not played for a few weeks.
