11th seed Jessica Pegula has struggled to put opponents away at match point this week, so far seeing 19 in victories over Qiang Wang and Anhelina Kalinina, but in some ways her resolve is impressive to come through. The 28-year-old is one of the highest seeds remaining in the draw now after so many fell in the second round and she is a solid dark horse for the title next Saturday after recently finishing runner-up to Ons Jabeur at the Madrid Open on clay. World number 25 Tamara Zidansek was very much not in the mix last season before a stunning run to the semi-finals was ended by eventual runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. The 24-year-old was handed a walkover to the third round after Mayar Sherif pulled out of their second round match but it may be her downfall here with Pegula in the better form and more finely tuned. Zidansek is realistically the more complete clay-courter but backing Pegula to win this encounter outright on her current trajectory seems reasonable.
