World number seven Jessica Pegula beat Yulia Putintseva in an assured straight-sets performance, backing up her three-set victory over defending champion Camila Giorgi. The 28-year-old has enjoyed her best season on tour to date with back-to-back quarter-finals reached at the Australian Open and Roland-Garros and a first Masters final reached in Madrid and she looks set to add to her current WTA titles total of one, from the 2019 Citi Open, sooner rather than later. Former world number one Simona Halep looks in title-winning form too after ousting in-form Coco Gauff in two tight sets on Friday. The Romanian is yet to drop a set in Toronto and she has great pedigree at this level with six Masters titles amongst her 23 WTA titles, including two won at the Canada Masters in 2016 and 2018. This is, oddly, the first ever meeting on tour between Pegula and Halep and their hard-graft playstyles look sure to provide a thriller on Saturday. Three sets seem likelier than two but given Halep’s record this week the sensible move is backing her to take at least one of them and leave the winner up to chance.
