28-year-old Jessica Pegula can break the top 10 on the WTA tour for a first time if she goes one round beyond current world number 10 Garbine Muguruza at Roland-Garros. The current world number 11 recently finished runner-up to Ons Jabeur at the Madrid Open on clay, backing up huge runs at the Australian Open and Miami Open in what has been her best season yet on tour. Pegula’s only WTA title to date came at the 2019 Washington Open but she should be considered an outsider here in Paris.
World number 100 Qiang Wang is still looking for a first win on clay this season and she has struggled to match the intensity that saw her stun Coco Gauff in the first round of the Australian Open back in January. The 30-year-old is at her best away from the clay and Pegula was the winner of tehri only previous meeting at last season’s Qatar Open in straight sets. The American should be coming through in two once again here.
