THE LOWDOWN

28-year-old Jessica Pegula will make her WTA Finals debut at Fort Worth as one of the outside favourites to go all the way after finally claiming her first Masters title at the Guadalajara Open last weekend. The US number one will partner world number four Coco Gauff in the Women’s Doubles event too, becoming the first Americans to rank inside the top four in Singles and Doubles since Venus and Serena Williams. Pegula has been the nearly-woman for much of this season, finishing runner-up to Ons Jabeur at the Madrid Open in May and losing out to world number one Iga Swiatek on four occasions – seeing the Pole go on to win all four of those tournaments.

World number five Maria Sakkari finished runner-up to Jessica Pegula, her opening WTA Finals opponent, in Guadalajara last weekend to make it two second-place finishes at Masters level this season – also finishing runner-up to Iga Swiatek at Indian Wells in March. The Greek became the first woman from her country to qualify for the WTA Finals last season but she still owns just one WTA title from the 2019 Rabat Open, with her deep but often doomed runs at Grand Slams keeping her afloat inside the top 10 over the last couple of years.

THE PREDICTION

A rematch of the recent Guadalajara Masters is the perfect way for new world number three Jessica Pegula to get her promising WTA Finals campaign underway and she will be well-backed by home crowds at Fort Worth as something of an underdog story on court despite her family’s billions. World number five Maria Sakkari is a deeply frustrating tennis player well capable of blasting anybody off the court if she does not have to think about it. The Greek was impressive in Guadalajara but ultimately fell quite comfortably to Pegula in the final and her American opponent is not the kind to step off the throttle. Back Pegula to win outright here, probably in two.
