28-year-old Jessica Pegula set a career-high WTA world ranking of 13th in early April after reaching the semi-finals of the Miami Open on her favoured hard surface. The American overcame a thrilling contest with Camila Giorgi on Friday for a first strong result on clay this season, with a shock defeat to Coco Vandeweghe at the Charleston Open taking some of the momentum out of her excellent 2022 campaign so far.
KAIA KANEPI
36-year-old veteran Kaia Kanepi beat 16-year-old prodigy Linda Fruhvirtova in straight sets on Friday on her favoured clay surface. The Estonian reached the round of 16 at the Charleston Open in early April before losing to Magda Linette and she reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open for a first time back in January before losing to Iga Swiatek in three sets.
THE PREDICTION
It is a surprise to find that this is the first ever meeting on tour between Kaia Kanepi and Jessica Pegula and it could be a proper thriller if the pair bring their battling best. Kanepi is probably the more comfortable on the clay but Pegula’s form this season has usually needed stopping by the very top players on tour and the conditions in Madrid should level things out a little for the hardcourt lover.
