28-year-old Jessica Pegula could break the top 10 of the WTA for a first time once the rankings are announced next Monday and she is two wins away from becoming the US number one. The current world number 11 has battled past two excellent clay-courters in Anhelina Kalinina and Tamara Zidansek over the last few days, in keeping with some superb form on clay including finishing runner-up to Ons Jabeur at the Madrid Open earlier this month. Pegula reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open for a successive year back in January before losing to eventual champion Ash Barty.
IRINA-CAMELIA BEGU
World number 68 Irina-Camelia Begu was assured in a straight-sets victory over French wildcard Leolia Jeanjean on Saturday, backing up an excellent win over Ekaterina Alexandrova. The 31-year-old has matched her best showing at a Grand Slam with a third round of 16 reached after first doing so at the 2015 Australian Open and then here in Paris a year later.
THE PREDICTION
Irina-Camelia Begu has been underestimated a few times in recent months and shocked plenty of top players, including Jessica Pegula in their first match of the season at Melbourne 2 back in January. The Romanian beat Aryna Sabalenka back in March and she is probably just about at her best on clay for a serious test of Pegula’s credentials as a potential finalist. Pegula has lost both previous matches against Begu but her form in recent weeks, in fact all season, has seen her quite rightly break into the top 10 on tour and she can be backed to edge through this the outright winner.
