US number one Jessica Pegula begins her Guadalajara Open campaign with a seriously tough challenge against Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina on Wednesday but the 28-year-old is clearly in the form of her career. 28-year-old Pegula has lost to the eventual champion in each of her last four tournaments: Simona Halep in the semi-finals of the Canada Masters, Caroline Garcia in the quarter-finals in Cincinnati and Iga Swiatek at both the US Open and last week’s San Diego Open. Meanwhile, world number 24 Rybakina beat Karolina Pliskova in an over-powered first round clash on Tuesday and she too has lost to the eventual champion of her last three tournaments: finishing runner-up to Katerina Siniakova at the Slovenia Open before defeats to Liudmila Samsonova in Tokyo and Barbora Krejcikova in the semi-finals of the Ostrava Open. This makes for a likely thriller here between two genuine title contenders, with Pegula looking the just-about favourite after she beat Rybakina in straight sets at the Miami Open back in March. Take Pegula to earn at least a set inside an accumulator or risk the outright on its own.
