World number six Jessica Pegula has taken a well-deserved break from the tour since an excellent run to the quarter-finals of the US Open was ended by eventual champion Iga Swiatek. The 28-year-old has lost in the quarter-finals to the eventual champion of three Grand Slams this season, Swiatek again at Roland-Garros and Ash Barty at the Australian Open, to show just how far she has come over the past few seasons and but she will be eager to hit the ground running after a whole month off court and Coco Vandeweghe stunned her in their first ever meeting earlier this season at the Charleston Open. Former world number nine Vandeweghe is more often found in the middling 100s on tour these days but a three-set victory over Sofia Kenin is proof that she can hold her own against top players if they are a little out of sorts or rusty. Backing Pegula to win outright looks the sensible option here as a result but she should realistically be taking this in two.
