THE PREDICTION

Defending champion Camila Giorgi is yet to drop a set this week at the Canada masters, beating first Emma Raducanu before Elise Mertens on Wednesday night. The 30-year-old found some insatiable form around this time last season but a first Masters title still came as a big surprise and getting anywhere near defending it this week would match that after what has ultimately been a disappointing 2022 so far. World number seven Jessica Pegula beat Asia Muhammad in straight sets on Wednesday and the 28-year-old should be considered a title contender herself on what remains her best surface. Pegula reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open for a second year running and matched that at Roland-Garros, with a runners-up finish to Ons Jabeur at the Madrid Open all contributing to her best season on tour by far.

The American number one leads this head-to-head 3-1 at tour level, first beating Giorgi in the 2-19 Washington Open final, but the Italian won their second meeting this time last year in the semi-finals of this very tournament on her way to the title. Pegula has won their last two encounters, including a three-set victory this year in Madrid, and backing her to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners seems wise here.
