In-form Jessica Pegula set a career-high WTA world ranking of 13th at the start of April after reaching a second-consecutive quarter-final at the Australian Open and a run to the Miami Open semi-finals before defeat to eventual champion Iga Swiatek. The 28-year-old is at her best on a hardcourt and she could struggle against clay specialists over this swing but she looks likely to outlast Camila Giorgi here with the Italian struggling for form on tour. 30-year-old Giorgi is certainly a player who requires a long run up to form but she found some last season to win a first Masters title at the Canadian Open, beating Pegula in the semi-finals there. The world number 31 is riding a five-match losing streak from a third round defeat to Ash Barty at the Australian Open and Pegula leads this head-to-head 2-1 at tour level having beaten the Italian to win her only title to date at the Washington Open in 2019 and at last season’s Cincinnati Open.
There is plenty of history in this clash but right now Giorgi does not look up to challenging Pegula’s searing form. Back the American to win outright.
