THE LOWDOWN

JESSICA PEGULA

World number 14 Jessica Pegula looked assured in a straight-sets victory over Kaia Kanepi on Sunday, backing up a solid three-set slog over Camila Giorgi. The 28-year-old reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open for a second-successive year back in January and recently reached the semi-finals of the Miami Open before defeat to the eventual champion Iga Swiatek.

BIANCA ANDREESCU

Former world number four Bianca Andreescu looked near the peak of her powers on Sunday with a blistering display against the sixth seed Danielle Collins. The 21-year-old is on the road back to full fitness after taking half a year off the tour through injury but until her body shows any signs of fatigue she should be considered a serious threat to the rest of the draw in Madrid. Andreescu won all three of her WTA titles back in 2019: two Masters titles at Indian Wells and the Canadian Open and the US Open with a stunning victory over Serena Williams.

THE PREDICTION

This is the first tour-level meeting between in-form Jessica Pegula and a resurgent Bianca Andreescu and it should be a proper thriller on Tuesday. 28-year-old Pegula looked a dark horse for the title coming into Madrid and with so many top seeds fallen by the way side she could well reach the final if she can get past this seriously tough draw. 21-year-old Andreescu played like it was 2019 on Sunday and if she can maintain that level for the rest of the tournament only the likes of Simona Halep could really stop her. This looks a coupon buster a few ways around but after her display against Collins it would be a surprise to see Andreescu lose in two here. Take the Canadian to win at least a set as the just-about likelier winner.
