World number five Jessica Pegula came back from a set down to beat Elena Rybakina 10-8 in the deciding tiebreak on Wednesday to make a huge statement early on in Guadalajara. The 28-year-old could be about to finally claim a first and well-deserved Masters title in her current form, especially with her kryptonite world number one Iga Swiatek missing from the draw this week. Pegula’s last four defeats have come against eventual champions, including Swiatek in her last two at the US Open and San Diego Open. This looks a fascinating and likely thrilling battle against former world number four Bianca Andreescu, who came back from a set down to beat Petra Kvitova on Tuesday. The 22-year-old looks to be coming back into a more recognisable version of her brilliant best after returning from a long injury lay-off earlier this year and if she can hit top gear she does have more weapons than her American opponent.
Pegula beat Andreescu in straight sets at the Madrid Masters back in May to level their head-to-head record at 1-1 and taking the third seed to earn at least a set looks the sensible way to lean in a match that could well go the distance.
