THE PREDICTION
World number 43 Jenson Brooksby has endured an odd summer with some highs but plenty of lows across clay and grass, two surfaces he certainly needs more experience on. The 21-year-old will have been itching to get back on a hardcourt and this North American swing could well see a maiden ATP title won, with two finals reached so far at last season’s Hall of Fame Open (lost. Kevin Anderson) and this season’s Dallas Open (lost. Reilly Opelka). Brooksby’s best campaign so far came at the US Open last September in a run to the round of 16 and he will be eager to rediscover that form over the next few months, with a straight-sets win over Benoit Paire on Tuesday a solid start. World number 51 Mackenzie McDonald is coming up to the anniversary of his best campaign on tour too after he finished runner-up to Jannik Sinner at the ATP 500 Washington Open last August. The 27-year-old is also at his best on hardcourts and a straight-set victory over Denis Kudla on Tuesday is also a decent opener ahead of this first meeting with Brooksby.
This is a tough call in a match that could well need a decider but Brooksby’s higher ceiling suggests leaning towards the younger American is the sensible option, Back Brooksby to win outright, or consider at least a set inside an accumulator.
