World number 25 John Isner was pushed to the brink on Thursday, needing a deciding tiebreak to oust an impressive wildcard in 19-year-old Ben Shelton. The big-serving veteran will be the better for it in this quarter-final clash with another promising young talent in 21-year-old Jenson Brooksby, who is yet to drop a set in Atlanta with back-to-back wins over Benoir Paire and Mackenzie McDonald. The world number 43 really kicked into gear this time last season, reaching a first tour final at the Hall of Fame Open before runs to the semi-finals of the Citi Open and round of 16 at the US Open, but Isner is the record-holding six-time champion here and that experience could prove crucial. Brooksby has so far struggled against big-servers, losing to Kevin Anderson in that first final in Newport and Reilly Opelka in his second back in February at the Dallas Open. This first meeting with Isner could come close but take the 37-year-old to win at least a set in a match that sees at least one tiebreak.
