THE LOWDOWN
JENSON BROOKSBY
21-year-old Jenson Brooksby will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of at least 34th after beating in-form David Goffin in straight sets on Wednesday. The American has previously struggled to find his game on clay but he now looks a creditable threat on the surface to go with an already excellent hardcourt game that has beaten the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Roberto Bautista Agut in recent times.
CASPER RUUD
World number 10 Casper Ruud grabbed a hugely important victory from a set down to Botic van de Zandschulp on Tuesday after struggling so far on his favoured clay. The 23-year-old finished runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at the Miami Open early last month and he has looked slightly jaded ever since on a clay swing that he was predicted to excel on. The Norwegian owns seven ATP titles to his name, six of which have come on clay including the Buenos Aires Open won back in February. Ruud reached the semi-finals of the ATP Finals on his debut last November.
THE PREDICTION
This is a wide-open first meeting between Jenson Brooksby and Casper Ruud. The Norwegian could have been confidently backed to win comfortably in these conditions a few weeks ago but his struggles to impose himself on tournaments over the last month coupled with Brooksby’s excellent result over Goffin on Wednesday makes this look a proper coupon buster. Brooksby is still an anomaly on tour with a pretty difficult ceiling to ascertain but it would be a surprise to see Ruud lose in two here in any circumstance. Backing the world number 10 to win at least a set looks the suitably cautious pick in what could be a thriller.
