World number four Carlos Alcaraz looked in searing form for the first two sets of his straight-sets victory over Federico Coria on Thursday but he lost his way somewhat in the third. The 19-year-old has on occasion this season, particularly more recently, let his showmanship overtake his game plan on court and he will have to tighten up against world number 43 Jenson Brooksby in this likely thriller. 21-year-old Brooksby needs work on the natural surfaces but he really comes into his own on a US hardcourt. The American will be well-backed as the underdog here by a home crowd who saw him burst onto the scene here last season with a huge run to the round of 16 and he is yet to drop a set this week after a superb performance against recent Cincinnati champion Borna Coric. A first meeting between two players likely to enjoy a strong rivalry over the next decade should be going in Alcaraz’s favour but it would not be a surprise to see four or even five sets here. Back the Spaniard to win outright and consider adding Brooksby to win at least a set.
