World number 19 Jelena Ostapenko has twice needed three sets to beat lower-ranked opposition this week in Seoul but the Latvian will be the better for each passing round. The 25-year-old has struggled to win back-to-back matches since a disappointing exit to Tatjana Maria in the round of 16 at Wimbledon, with a first round exit at the US Open earlier this month particularly poor, but having done so now she should be visibly less preoccupied in this challenging first encounter with 17-year-old Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva. The Andorran will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 153rd no matter the outcome of this first tour quarter-final but there is more than a scent of an upset here given her excellent run to the last eight without dropping a set and Ostapenko’s own below-par efforts. The sensible call is backing Ostapenko to win outright all the same but a one-off on Jimenez Kasintseva to produce a proper shock could be worth taking here.
