World number 56 Nuno Borges enjoyed a brilliant start to 2024 with a career-best run to the round of 16 at the Australian Open but he has so far endured a tough time on clay. The 27-year-old impressed on home clay in Estoril, upsetting Lorenzo Musetti there, but he was beaten in controversial fashion by Cristian Garin in the quarter-finals and he suffered a tough exit in three sets to Corentin Moutet in Bucharest last week.
World number 73 Jaume Munar will fancy his chances at a mini upset here with a partisan crowd behind him in Madrid. The 26-year-old struggles for consistency on tour but he has looked in decent shape in recent weeks, beating the likes of Luca Van Assche and Yoshihito Nishioka on the surface, and he reached the last 16 here last season to prove his ability in Madrid’s unique conditions. Back Munar to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
