23-year-old Mikael Ymer produced a stunning campaign at the Citi Open earlier this month, beating Andy Murray, Aslan Karatsev, Emil Ruusuvuori and Sebastian Korda before a well-contested defeat to eventual champion Nick Kyrgios. The Swede struggled to maintain that intensity at Winston-Salem last week but he will be eager to make amends on the big stage and he has form for impressive performances at Grand Slams, stunning both Hubert Hurkacz and Carlos Alcaraz at the Australian Open last season. However, world number 109 Jason Kubler has also recently proved himself at a major tournament with a career-best run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon last month that was cruelly denied ranking points. The 29-year-old has grabbed most of his best results on grass and clay this season but sets look likely to go both ways in this first meeting between the two and picking a winner looks difficult. Given Ymer’s more recent form, and in similar sweltering conditions in Washington to New York current weather, back the Swede to win at least two sets and leave the winner up to chance.
