THE PREDICTION

29-year-old Jason Kubler set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 71st last week after a solid start to 2023, although the Aussie’s victory alongside Rinky Hijikata in the Men’s Doubles at the Australian Open makes this his best season so far already. Kubler has been able to play solidly at tour-level for over a year for the first time in his injury-plagued career and the results have been fantastic, with last summer’s run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon suggesting there is more to come. World number 60 Lorenzo Sonego is better than his current ranking suggests but the Italian has struggled to impose himself on tour for much of the last two seasons. A straight-sets victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime at the Dubai Tennis Championships last week is proof of what he is capable but the Italian’s results have been erratic for some time. Kubler beat Sonego in three sets in their first meeting back in 2021 and the Aussie is much improved since then. Back Kubler to earn at least a set here and leave the victor up to chance.
