Hall of Fame Open third seed Alexander Bublik beat Andy Murray in straight sets for the second time this season in what was, remarkably, their fourth meeting on tour already this year. The 25-year-old has been serving his usual brand of make-or-break tennis this week, with 34 aces and 21 double faults good enough to keep Murray and Jack Sock at bay. The Kazakh looks the slight favourite here after his performances so far but this is very much a head versus heart situation against Jason Kubler, who is one win away from breaking his career-high ATP world ranking of 91 that he first achieved in 2018. Form like this has been a long time coming for the 29-year-old former world number one junior, with a series of injuries and resulting surgeries stealing an inordinate amount of time from his promising career. Kubler stunned the top seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in the round of 16 earlier this week as he continues his level from a breakthrough run to the second week of Wimbledon last time out.
The Aussie beat James Duckworth in straight sets on Friday after saving match points against Auger-Aliassime and taking him to win at least a set here feels a reasonable risk in leaving the eventual winner up to chance. You could consider taking at least a tiebreak in the match instead, with big-serving Bublik coming close on a few occasions this week and Kubler’s last two matches seeing at least one.
