THE PREDICTION
World number 103 Viktorija Golubic came back from a set down to beat Kristina Mladenovic in two ultimately comfortable sets on Thursday. The 29-year-old is far better than her current WTA ranking suggests but she has struggled to live up to the heights of her best season on tour last year, where she reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon and finished runner-up at two finals in Lyon and Monterrey. The Swiss’ only WTA title to date came on clay at the 2016 Gstaad Open but she is probably better-suited to the grass these days, with a recent run to the semi-finals at the Nottingham Open promising more than she ultimately delivered last month. World number 58 Jasmine Paolini also needed three sets to beat Clara Burel on Thursday morning and the Italian looks to be finding her feet on tour once again after a difficult first half of 2022. Paolini reached the semi-finals of the Palermo Open last week before defeat in three to Lucia Bronzetti and that makes for a tough call against Golubic, who has fewer results on clay to call upon.
The Swiss beat Paolini in three sets at Indian Wells back in March in their only previous tour-level meeting, so taking her to edge this seems a reasonable risk. At least a set to Golubic would be the suitably cautious pick for an accumulator, though.
