26-year-old Jasmine Paolini became the first victim of eventual champion Ons Jabeur’s stunning campaign at the Madrid Open last week in a well-contested straight-sets defeat. The Italian has struggled on clay so far this season and despite the likelihood of some strong backing in the first round in Rome she has drawn a very tough opener in this first meeting with Jil Teichmann. 24-year-old Teichmann is in her element on this surface and she will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 29th after reaching the semi-finals in Madrid before losing to eventual runner-up Jessica Pegula. The Swiss has excellent Masters pedigree after reaching her first final at the Cincinnati Open last season and she looks set to keep rolling on her favoured clay. Back Teichmann to win outright here on a surface that favours her over Paolini.
