THE LOWDOWN
World number two Anett Kontaveit won four tournaments in just over two months this time last season, starting with the Cleveland Championships, in the form of her career that took her all the way to finishing runner-up at the WTA Finals. The 26-year-old claimed the sixth WTA title of her career at the St. Petersburg Open back in February but she has struggled over the past few months since contracting covid-19. Kontaveit reached the round of 16 here in 2015 and 2020 but her best run at a Grand Slam remains reaching the quarter-finals at the Australian Open in 2020.
THE PREDICTION
This looks a kind opener for Konatevit to steady herself in New York as she faces world number 76 Jaqueline Cristian for a first time. 24-year-old Cristian is returning from a long injury lay-off from March, where she impressed with a victory over Elena Rybakina before having to retire against Daria Kasatkina at the Qatar Masters. The Romanian should be able to get back to her top 50 level sometime soon but back Kontaveit to win this fairly comfortably, probably in two, to set up a potential second-round clash with Serena Williams.
