23-year-old J.J. Wolf can break inside the top 70 for a first time with a win here against Christopher O’Connell after a straight-sets victory over Stefan Kozlov on Tuesday. The eighth seed has enjoyed some excellent results over the summer, with a run to the US Open third round last time out seeing a stunning victory over Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets. World number 130 Christopher O’Connell lost the first set to Jason Kubler in their first round clash on Tuesday but took the second before his compatriot was forced to retire from the match. The win snapped a five-match losing streak for the Aussie but it could feel a hollow one given the nature of it. Wolf will be well-backed by whatever size of crowd turns up in San Diego and he is certainly the player in better form. Back the American to win outright.
