26-year-old Leolia Jeanjean grabbed the result of her career on Thursday by stunning an out-of-sorts former world number one Karolina Pliskova in straight sets. The Frenchwoman was once touted as a future star but several serious knee injuries put tennis on the back-burner for some time, followed by the covid-19 pandemic after she completed a degree in the US. Jeanjean will break the top 150 for a first time in the WTA world rankings after two brilliant results of Pliskova and Nuria Parrizas-Diaz in the first round and she faces a reasonable shot at making the second week of a major on her Grand Slam debut here against Irina-Camelia Begu.
World number 63 Begu is lucky to be in the third round after a poor decision to throw her racket backfired as it somersaulted over her and into the crowd, almost hitting a child.
